5 Stars Best saline for sensitive eyes
I’ve used this product for years and years ever since my optometrist at the Morgan Eye Center, Berkeley, discovered that Re-Nu was hurting my eyes and causing inflammation and blister flareups. She gave me this solution to try, and since 1996, it’s been the most gentle solution on my poor dry eyes. It’s so gentle you can even use it as a rinse or wetting drops.

A few years ago, CIBA was transferring the production of this saline solution, which resulted in a national shortage then disappearance; seriously, bottles were being sold on eBay. When stores ran out, I couldn’t find any proper saline solution to replace it and had to use another “sensitive eyes” solution that just did not work as well and also stung a bit. Those were some sad times.

Luckily, SoftWear has returned, and CIBA seems to have resolved its production issues. For me, SoftWear has been the Holy Grail of saline solutions. I would have no problem using it as a rinse on my son’s eyes when he gets sand or dust in them. I keep an emergency bottle in the car.

Last but not least, I do not believe that this saline solution ripped a contact lens. When one cleans a lens, it’s any slight friction from the fingertips and palm that can cause tears. I also keep my fingernails trimmed extremely close to the finger and have inadvertently torn a lens; it had nothing to do with the saline solution or state of fingernails.

4 Stars Good for Sensitive Eyes
I’ve used other saline products, and all of them irritate my eyes slightly when I put the contact lenses on my eyes. It’s probably the preservatives. This is one of the only products that doesn’t bother me.

2 Stars This stuff just ripped my soft contact lens
I used to use Bausch and Lomb saline solution but I switched to this stuff because I got it in the mail for free and I am also using Clear Care by Ciba Vision. Well, I was just cleaning my contacts with the saline solution and about to put them in the case when I noticed one had ripped while I was cleaning it. I blame the saline solution because I don’t have long nails and this was a NEW pair of contacts I put in my eyes (had started on Sept. 10th.) It is now Sept. 24th. When I was using Bausch and Lomb my contacts never ripped. Looks like I am going back to Bausch and Lomb. Don’t use Ciba Vision Softwear Saline solution.
