Contact lenses are slowly outnumbering eye glasses with regards to the number of its users world wide. This is not so surprising due to the fact that contact lenses have been dramatically improved since it was first released in the market. A lot of benefits have been added to it which basically outweighs those benefits which are provided by eye glasses. Also, all of the fundamental functions of eye glasses have been thoroughly incorporated in contact lenses which is the reason why people are now shifting to using contact lenses due to its practicality and convenience.
Before we go to learning the simple ways in taking care of contact lenses, let us first explore the various reasons in why people use contact lenses and for which purposes they use it. This is important in order to give you a broader point of view on how to handle your contact lenses depending on your personal use of it.
First and foremost, people use contact lenses because they have eye problems such as being near or far sighted. Contact lenses have the same corrective benefits found in eye glasses and at the same time is more practical which is the main reason why people prefer it over eye glasses. Another one of its benefits is that its ease of storage is remarkable. The contact lens kit at most times is a small pouch which contains all the items that you will need like the case of the contact lens, a cleaning solution and a lubricant. These items are essential since they are used to clean and preserve the contact lenses which is basically taking care of it. Next, contact lenses are outstandingly more comfortable to wear compared to eye glasses since it is light weight, virtually invisible (given that is it the clear type) and causes no painful marks behind your ears. It is also less likely to be affected by cold, wet and humid weather as compared to eye glasses. Basically, when eye glasses are exposed to these environmental factors, the tendency is that the lens will be occupied by steam or moist that will limit the user’s vision. This rarely happens when using contact lenses. There are also many types of contact lenses available in the market depending on disposability. These include the daily, weekly, monthly and annually disposable contact lenses which are purchased depending on the needs of the customer. When it comes to range, it provides a wider and more accurate field of vision compared to eye glasses which is useful in activities that require you to be alert of all your surroundings at all times. It is also more handy and preferred with regards to sports due to the fact that most sports like boxing and basketball will leave you ending up with a pair of broken eye glasses. If unfortunate enough, you might even end up being blind if your eye glasses was shattered in a way that the some of its shards went into your cornea. With contact lenses, these worries with using eye glasses are but things of the past. Lastly, contact lenses have been innovated and now it comes with new designs and colors. People are able to use it for their fashion statements or to even show their personalities and emotions through the colors depicted by their contact lenses.
I hope you were able to identify which purposes and benefits come along with your personal use of your contact lenses.
Now to start with how to take care of your contact lenses, there are a few things you should first know in taking care of them before we proceed to the basic steps.
- The contact lens solution is strictly for cleaning. Although at times it can be used as a lubricant, it is not advised to do so for it may irritate your eyes.
- When cleaning your contact lenses, do not rub too hard or you might tear the lenses apart.
-Always check your contact lenses after cleaning them. There might be small tears that are unnoticeable at first glance. These tears might damage your eyes and cause blindness when the contact lenses are worn.
-Never share your lubricant with another person even if the person did not place the tip of your lubricant near his or her eyes. Contact lenses are dirty and has a wide range in which it “spreads” bacteria due to the fact that oxygen is able to penetrate new designs of contact lenses these days.
-If your contact lenses are not made for sleep then by all means do not sleep with them. You will be risking your eyes with bacterial infection which may cause permanent blindness and at the same time are lessening the life span of your lenses.
Basically, there are four concrete steps in making sure that you are able to properly take care of your contact lenses. First of all, you should always make it a point to clean your contact lenses before you wear them. This not only makes it clean but also removes the protein build up which reduces its life span. Second, make sure that you do not wear it over its specified wear time. Again, this shortens its life span as more and more bacteria and protein accumulate the longer you wear it. Also, it is easier for the bacteria and protein to penetrate it the longer you wear it over its specified wear time since the anti-microorganism protection that the solution provides it has already worn off. Third, do not scratch your eyes when they are irritated due to the contact lenses. If you are having a red eye then remove your contact lenses and clean them with your solution. Do not wear them until your eye is in normal condition for it will just irritate it again. Scratching your eyes damages the contact lenses depending on the pressure applied. Finally, whenever you remove your contact lenses, also make sure that you clean and soak them in a new solution. Make sure it is sealed well in its case so that no bacteria can affect it. The next time you open your case, be sure to check whether your contact lenses has dried up before wearing it. If in case it is hard and dry, just soak it in a clean solution for a couple of minutes and start again from step one.

This is a great article on the care of contact lenses. I have always enjoyed wearing my Night and Day lenses, but despite the length of their wear, I was picky about finding a good solution. Some solutions actually wore down my lenses and made them blurry after use. So I switched to Blairex, which doesn’t include preservatives found in a lot of saline solution. It works great! Stores may carry it, but I have found it super cheap at the following site.
